A message from our Head of School
At Discovery School, we think about the purpose of education everyday. In our 43 years, we have sought to keep the natural curiosity that drives love of learning in children alive and well. As an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, we can also certify that our focus is not on distributing information, but on educating the whole-child and on teaching them how to think. The IB is committed to research-based, inquiry-driven, student-centered teaching practices with a clear emphasis on international mindedness that promotes commitment to peace and equality in our country and in our world. At Discovery School, we embrace the idea that our students will need to grow-up prepared to be thinkers, problem-solvers and risk-takers who are capable of reflecting on the impact of their contributions to the world.
This school has a proud past, a dynamic present, and a very bright future. We are working everyday to be a place where teachers and students want to be! When practices are developmentally appropriate, challenging, exciting, and rooted in real-life experiences, who wouldn't want to be here? We're situated on a beautiful property surrounded by woods. This natural environment is a natural extension of the learning space. Students at Discovery School are outside everyday and immersed in outdoor learning as often as possible! Yes, we're alternative in the sense that we're a departure from the norms of public school. We don't retreat from this. Rather, we're proud of it. After all, leadership, collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, service, DISCOVERY....are habits of the mind...habits that should be practiced from the time a child begins his or her school experience. In life, reading, writing, math, social studies, and science are integrated into everything we do. That is why we choose to also teach in a transdisciplinary way that helps our students make these connections.
This school community thrives on the commitment of its remarkable faculty and staff, the trust of its amazing families, and the contributions of generous supporters. I'm so proud to lead Discovery School and happy to share more about it with anyone who will listen. Thank you for joining us through our website. Please follow-up with a visit.
